Science Of Hair Growth: Exploring the Biological Processes Behind Hair Growth

Hair, is an essential aspect of our personal appearance, and an expression of our personality. And so, the health of hair follicles plays a vital role in maintaining lustrous and strong locks. The Hair follicles are small organs located within the skin, and are responsible for hair growth and maintenance.

By understanding the intricacies of hair follicles, we can unlock the secrets to achieving and maintaining healthy, luxuriant hair.

Structure of Hair Follicles

Hair follicles are complex structures composed of multiple layers and cell types. Each hair follicle comprises the hair bulb, papilla, sebaceous gland, and arrector pili muscle. The hair bulb, located at the base of the follicle, houses actively dividing cells responsible for hair growth. The papilla, a specialized cluster of connective tissue, supplies nutrients and oxygen to the hair bulb, aiding in hair development. The sebaceous gland, positioned near the hair bulb, produces sebum, an oily substance that moisturizes and nourishes the hair and scalp. The arrector pili muscle, connected to the hair follicle, enables hair to stand on end when stimulated.

THE FOUR STAGES OF HAIR GROWTH

Anagen Phase: This is a phase known as the growth phase and the period where hair physically grows at an approximate of 1.25 cm per month. Hair begins in the papilla and can last from two to seven years. The longer the hair stays in the anagen phase, the longer it will grow. During this phase the cells in the papilla divide to produce new hair fibers resulting into the follicle burying itself into the dermal layer of the skin to nourish the strand. Because hair is continuously growing during the anagen phase, the length of this phase of the hair growth cycle is determined by the maximum length of your hair and for most people this is 18 to 40 inches.

Catagen Phase: This is also known as the regression or transitional phase where the hair follicles shrink in size, detach from your skin and starts the process of falling out which takes around 2 weeks. Although hair in this phase "detaches" from the skin, it usually does not fall out until the new hair pushes it out from the scalp.

Telogen Phase: This is known as the resting phase and in this phase the follicles remain dormant for two to five months. Most people have about 10 to 20% of their hair in this phase but more hair shedding can be temporarily triggered by stress and other health related conditions.

Telogen Exogen Phase: This is known as the shedding phase. In this phase the old hair completely detaches from the scalp and falls out which is replaced by new hair completing the hair growth cycle, giving you replacement hairs for all of the hairs lost during the catagen, telogen and exogen phases of the growth process.

What causes increased hair loss?

Normally a healthy adult may lose about 70 to 100 hairs on their head per day. But because new hairs are always growing and replacing them, this natural hair loss isn't noticeable.

But the rate of hair loss may increase noticeably if the hair roots are damaged during the growth phase or if a lot of hairs go into the resting phase at the same time. If no new hair grows and replaces the hair, that part of the skin becomes bald. This type of hair loss is referred to as alopecia – regardless of how large the bald spot is or whether it affects the scalp or body hair. In some types of alopecia, the hair may grow back. But baldness can also be permanent – one typical example is gradual hair loss in men (male pattern hair loss).

The hair growth process just like other important processes in your body can be interrupted and affected by external factors like stress, malnutrition and illness. The lack of a balanced diet can cause hair to enter the telogen phase prematurely resulting in excessive thinning and hair loss. Some studies also show that stress can inhibit hair growth by causing hair to enter into the catagen phase prematurely (telogen effluvium).

Our Non-surgical Treatments that Regenerate Hair Follicles To Regrow Healthy Hair

Minoxidil (Rogaine):

It works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, promoting hair growth, and preventing further hair loss when applied topically.

Finasteride (Propecia):

Finasteride is an FDA-approved oral medication recommended for male pattern baldness that works by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone (DHT), slowing down hair loss and promoting hair regrowth in men.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) delivers low-intensity light at infrared wavelengths to stimulate biological activity in cells by increasing blood flow to the scalp and hair follicles. This results in stopping hair loss and promoting healthy hair growth with continued use.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy:

This non-surgical procedure involves drawing a small amount of the patient's blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting the platelet-rich plasma with its growth factors into the scalp. This results in stimulating growth in hair follicles.

Injectable Platelet Rich Fibrin (IPRF)

IPRF too uses the patient's own blood, but unlike PRP, IPRF forms a fibrin matrix which provides a more sustained release of growth factors and cytokines that potentially enhances the healing and regenerative processes for stimulating hair follicles and promoting hair growth.

Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC)

GFC uses concentrated growth factors derived from platelets from the patient’s blood or other sources to stimulate cellular proliferation, angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), and tissue repair, which are essential processes for hair follicle regeneration and hair growth

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves injecting a combination of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients directly into the scalp to promote hair growth and improve the overall health of the hair follicles.

Hair Care Kit

The inLab+ WITH DR. NISHITA Hair Care Kit is the ultimate hair care kit that can be delivered to your door step. It contains a Shampoo, Conditioner, Growth Serum and Growth Oil that repairs hair damage, while revitalizing, nourishing, and stimulating new hair growth.

Hair Transplant Surgery:

A Hair transplant involves harvesting hair follicles from areas of the scalp with healthy hair growth (the donor area) and transplanting them into areas with thinning or balding hair (the recipient area). A hair transplant is highly effective in restoring hair density and can provide lasting results.

Note: Like most hair loss treatments, our products begin to work immediately but results tend to vary from person to person. Some begin to see results as soon as 7 days while for others it can take over two months or longer depending on various factors.
